About Our Recovery Centre

A place with a deep legacy of hope and life change.

Our Story

Creating a space for rest and renewal

Gracepoint is a place of rest, recovery and renewal. Based at Orama on Great Barrier Island, we offer personalised programmes to support mental wellness, burnout recovery, addiction and trauma healing, and professional wellbeing.

We work with individuals, couples and families to help them reconnect, find peace and take practical steps forward. Whether someone needs time out from a high-pressure job, is struggling with mental health, or looking for a fresh start after trauma, Gracepoint provides a safe and supportive space to begin again.

The heart of Gracepoint

Gracepoint was created to respond to the growing need for deeper support in our fast-paced, high-pressure world. We understand that many people face burnout, emotional fatigue, addiction, grief or trauma often in silence.

Our goal is to walk with people through these challenges. We create personalised experiences with wrap-around care that includes professional counselling, pastoral/peer support and guided activities. Some guests come for a quiet retreat. Others join a fully supported programme. Every journey is different and we meet people where they are.

Our services are grounded in Christian values, but Gracepoint is open to all. We simply want to provide a place where people can pause, reflect, and find their way forward with the right support behind them.

A little of our history

Orama was founded in 1962 by Neville and Dorothy Winger, who purchased an 800-acre coastal farm in Karaka Bay from the Padderson family. From the very beginning, Orama was more than just a place. It was a vision—one where people could come to experience renewal, community, and connection with God.

Over the years, Orama has hosted countless conferences, training programmes, youth camps and spiritual retreats. At its peak, it operated a Bible school, a radio station, a rehabilitation centre, and a publishing ministry. Through these efforts, Orama influenced people not only across New Zealand but around the world many of whom went on to lead ministries and movements of their own.

The land itself carries a deeper story too. Historically, local Iwi used the valley to grow medicinal plants and herbs, including mairehau—a fragrant plant believed to bring peace and healing. That same spirit of restoration continues today.
